What is the Introduction to Estill Workshop like?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Back in June last year I ran a one-day in-person workshop that introduced a mixed group of singers, teachers, choir leaders and actors to Estill Voice Training™. Due to popular demand I am running another one on Sunday 7th July in the same venue, the beautiful Community Studio at the back of the Cathedral Gift Shop in the heart of the Cathedral Precinct in Canterbury.

What is Estill Voice Training™?

Estill Voice Training™ is used all over the world by both performing professionals and keen amateurs, those who use their voice professionally in other capacities such as in business industries and teaching, and by those who work with professional voice users like Speech and Language therapists, choir leaders, directors and musical directors.

In the workshop, we adhere to Estill Voice Training™’s principles:

  • Estill Voice Training™ has no aesthetic bias

  • All qualities are acceptable as long as vocal health is not jeopardised

  • Everyone has a beautiful voice

You can find out more about what Estill is here.

How will the day run?

The introductory workshop will briefly take you through the background of how Estill Voice Training™ evolved, through the work of Jo Estill, an opera singer turned voice researcher, and then will delve straight into a mix of practical and theoretical exploration of the Estill Voice Model™ itself.

Throughout the course of the day, we:

  • Look at the way the voice functions from a scientific perspective, with anatomical drawings to support your understanding

  • Listen to examples of different vocal qualities

  • Explore practical exercises to train our voices and those we work with in these different qualities

  • ‘See’ our voices on a spectrogram and learn about their acoustic qualities

  • Discuss how to apply the learning in different ways and in different contexts

… and most importantly, we

  • Make lots of noise throughout!

We have a break mid-morning, and mid-afternoon, where refreshments and biscuits are provided, and an hour’s break for lunch where you can either bring a packed lunch or head into the city to find something you fancy.

Open session

At the end of the day, there is an open session where those who would like to are invited to sing or perform a piece of text to the group, which we then work on together applying the learning from the day. This is a highly valuable part of the session and previous participants have thoroughly enjoyed both singing and watching these performances!
